How do you get ahead in today’s job market?
The internet is flooded with advice, but none of it seems to work. That’s because we’re in a new era of hiring. Competition for roles is sky-high, recruiter resources have been slashed and trends like ghosting and AI auto-rejections are a normal part of the experience.
At Greenhouse, we have unique insights into what actually works now. Companies use our software to run their entire hiring process, and nearly 1M job seekers were hired through our platform in 2024 alone.
This isn’t another article with generic tips and tricks on how to get hired. This is a breakdown of the tools and technology we’ve built to help you get ahead in today’s ultra-competitive job market.
Tools in MyGreenhouse to help you get ahead
1. Get notified when the jobs you want go live – so you can be one of the first candidates to apply
With competition so fierce, some companies list a job for only a day or two. They open the floodgates, let applicants rush in and pull up the drawbridge. Miss the window? Tough.
This puts all the burden on you to know when the good roles go live. And that’s not really fair. Even Ticketmaster gives you a heads-up when Taylor Swift tickets are about to go on sale.
MyGreenhouse offers several ways to make sure you never miss an opportunity. You can set up Job Alerts by telling us what kind of roles you’re looking for and we’ll notify you as soon as matching positions are posted. You can also follow the companies you’re most interested in. You’ll get immediate alerts when they post new roles, and when you apply, they’ll see that you’ve been following them, demonstrating your genuine interest in their organization. And coming soon, our job board will allow you to browse all open roles at Greenhouse customers whenever you want, giving you a real-time view of every available opportunity.
2. Save your information in one place – so you can apply faster and more often
Job applications are a pain to fill out. Many of them seem longer than they need to be, and some require you to share information that’s already sitting there in your resume. We ran a survey to ask job seekers what frustrates them most about the hiring process, and they told us their number one pain point is the long, burdensome job applications they need to fill out.
We built tools to make it easier for you to apply without compromising the quality of your application. With Quick Apply, you can save all your key information in one place – your experience, achievements, work preferences – and autofill applications on hundreds of job boards of Greenhouse customers. Soon, you’ll also be able to list yourself in our database, making it easy for companies using Greenhouse to find you.
3. Highlight what makes you uniquely qualified so you can stand out to recruiters
Let’s be honest, many resumes and cover letters are outlandish works of fiction. The slightly inflated job title. The exaggerated growth number. The made-up project you ran. We know that everyone does it, and so do recruiters. But it’s not really fair to candidates who actually had that fancy job title, actually hit that big growth number, actually ran that high-impact project.
More hiring managers are beginning to look beyond resumes and cover letters as a way to screen candidates. They’re seeking ways to learn more about who candidates really are. This is good for hiring companies, but also good for you if you truly are a good fit.
MyGreenhouse gives you multiple ways to showcase what makes you uniquely qualified. You can provide differentiating data in your application that goes beyond the standard resume format, helping you highlight the unique qualities that make you a good fit for the role. We call this enriched profile of your background and interests your unique fingerprint. And when you find a role you’re truly excited about, you can designate it as your Dream Job. This will move your application to the front of the queue, ensuring recruiters see it first.
4. Stay on top of updates from hiring companies
Knowing where you stand with a hiring company is an important part of getting ahead. If a recruiter shares an update about a role you applied for, you want to be the first to know. If it’s good news, you can start preparing for the next round. And if it’s bad news, at least you can move on quickly. It’s the not-knowing that’s hardest.
Similarly, keeping on top of emails you get from recruiters about brand-new roles helps, too. But how do you know which ones are legit? It’s no secret that there are a lot of spammy, impersonal emails from recruiters flying around these days. Chances are, you don’t even open them. And that makes it more likely you’ll miss that one real email that’s inviting you to interview for a great role.
With MyGreenhouse, you can track the status of every application you submit through MyGreenhouse and receive secure, regular updates about your job applications. You don’t have to wonder what’s going on with the roles you applied for – everything you need to know is right there in MyGreenhouse.
5. Apply to companies with fair hiring practices
No matter how qualified you are for a role, if the hiring process isn’t fair and well-run, you’re more likely to slip through the cracks. Worse than that, you’re more likely to have your time wasted – time that could’ve been spent applying to roles at companies that deliver positive, equitable experiences to all candidates.
With ghosting, ghost jobs and chaotic interview processes on the rise, it’s more important than ever to consider the reputation of the companies you’re applying to. That’s easier said than done, especially with so many job hunters feeling like they can’t be picky in today’s super competitive job market.
This is why we created Greenhouse Verified, which helps you identify companies with a proven track record of being fair, respectful, prepared and communicative with candidates. When you see the Greenhouse Verified badge, you can be confident that you’re applying to a company that takes hiring seriously and will treat your application with the respect it deserves.

To get ahead today, you need to hear about roles as soon as they go live and then be able to apply quickly.
